Purpose: Assists in planning and implementing the education and administration of the Middle School.
Qualifications & Skills:
Qualifications & Skills:
- A minimum of five years of classroom teaching experience
- Previous leadership experience
- Bachelor's degree in Education or a related area, Master's degree preferred
- Knowledge of learning differences and the social-emotional development of middle school students
- Ability to proactively problem-solve for students, parents, and teachers, demonstrate sound judgment when making independent decisions, and remain calm when handling emergencies
- Must have strong computer and technology skills
- Must have a positive attitude and strong communication skills.
- Utilize good humor and even temperament when working with various Shelton constituencies.
- Possess strong written and oral communication skills and listening skills
- Demonstrated ability to receive and act on suggestions and input from staff, students, and parents
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, parents, and staff
- Display a positive and supportive attitude toward school policies.
- Maintain a student-first mindset and commitment to the Shelton mission.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Assist the Head of Middle School in overseeing the educational program of all students and the activities of all personnel.
Essential Functions:
- Regular and punctual attendance and consistency of interaction with students, parents, and colleagues is essential to the successful performance of this job.
- In coordination with the Human Resources department, assist the Middle School Head in the recruitment, selection, and in-service training of the Middle School faculty.
- Guide, evaluate, and support teachers to continually improve curriculum and instruction.
- Support new teachers as a mentor and/or assign mentors.
- Model teaching procedures when necessary.
- Teach classes as assigned.
- Guide and direct students according to the Code of Conduct.
- Manage student behavior and attendance as directed.
- Assist in the coordination in the areas of
- Curriculum
- Evaluation, selection, and ordering of materials
- Annual in-house and achievement testing, and any other evaluation of student progress
- Review of all course grades and grade reports for Middle School students
- Maintenance and security of Middle School student records
- Collection and analysis of data to guide student class placement
- Scheduling of classes and events
- Planning and logistics of special events: Open House, Grandparents’ Day, Citizenship Assemblies, advisory parties, end of the year Awards Assembly, field trips, and class trips
- Select chaperones and act as chaperone for social events, extracurricular programs, field trips and and class trips as needed
- Organize teacher coverage for assemblies/programs, trips, and field trips
- Meetings with new families/prospective students
- Scheduling visitors
- Planning and operation of Summer School and Skills Week as directed
- Scheduling and communication with private therapists and outside tutors
- Regular parent communication
- Assist the Middle School Head with any other duties as assigned.
