Purpose: The Lead Facilities Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and daily operation of all major building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire/life safety. Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, this role provides technical leadership, coordinates vendor and internal technician work, and ensures the systems are running efficiently, safely, and in compliance with applicable codes. The Lead Facilities Engineer also plays a key role in implementing preventive maintenance strategies and managing repairs for a large educational campus.
Qualifications & Skills:
High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree or higher in a technical discipline preferred
Certificate from a trade or vocational school in HVAC
Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in facilities or building systems, including supervisory duties
Universal CFC Certification Certified and/or licensed in HVAC and refrigeration systems
Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), or Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) systems
Strong troubleshooting, leadership, and communication skills
Essential Functions:
Building Systems Operations
Monitor and operate all building systems including HVAC, lighting, plumbing, electrical, and life safety
Program and manage Building Automation Systems (BAS/EMS/ATC) for events, holidays, and routine schedules
Analyze data and performance trends to identify inefficiencies and optimize system function
Maintenance & Repairs
Lead and manage work order assignments—self-performed, delegated to internal staff, or contracted externally
Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance of all building systems
Diagnose and repair HVAC equipment, electrical circuits, lighting fixtures, electronic gates, door hardware, plumbing systems, and related components
Ensure repairs and services minimize disruption to academic or operational activities
Preventive Maintenance
Manage and execute a robust preventive maintenance schedule to extend the life of equipment
Create and adjust recurring maintenance tasks based on facility growth and operational changes
Document completed work and analyze trends for future planning
Safety & Code Compliance
Enforce workplace safety practices and conduct relevant training for facilities personnel
Ensure all systems comply with building codes, fire/life safety regulations, and applicable environmental standards
Lead inspections and testing of fire alarms, extinguishers, and emergency systems
Vendor & Project Oversight
Assist in drafting scopes of work, soliciting bids, and evaluating contractor proposals
Supervise contractor performance to ensure quality, schedule adherence, and safety compliance
Oversee minor renovation and infrastructure improvement projects
Communicate regularly with vendors, internal departments, and administration regarding status and needs
Other Duties
Support logistics and coordination for school moves, space reconfigurations, or event setups
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities
