June Shelton School & Evaluation Center enjoys the distinction of being the worlds largest independent school for bright children with learning differences. Founded in 1976, Shelton is dedicated to making a difference by serving and empowering the lives of students who learn differently. While the school is clearly the centerpiece of its mission, Shelton is more than a school. It encompasses three other major components, all open to the communitya speech and language therapy program, an evaluation center, and a teacher-training program.  Shelton is actively involved with research and collaborates with major medical institutions in the Dallas area, including Childrens Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Shelton School is a co-educational, non-sectarian school that serves approximately 900 students with learning differences in grades EC to 12. The Shelton School is accredited by Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS).

Purpose:
Serve as an academic language therapist and a speech-language pathologist to a selected group of students in the Lower School

Qualifications
  • Master of Science or Arts (MS/MA) required.
  • Currently licensed as a speech-language pathologist in the state of Texas; holds Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCCs) through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
  • Dubard Association Method Training required. Shelton will provide training if needed.
  • Knowledge of students with learning differences.
  • Must have basic computer skills and technology, including Google Suite.
  • Must be sensitive to the confidentiality of school files, programs, and student information. 
  • Must have a positive attitude, be flexible, and have strong interpersonal skills.
Essential Job Functions
  • Assess and remediate speech and language, voice, fluency, and social communication disorders of the assigned Shelton students.
  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the Shelton Lower School curriculum.
  • Manage and implement effectively the Lower School's purchased technology for educational and administrative needs.
  • Adapt and modify lessons to meet each child’s needs and abilities.
  • Understand/have knowledge of students’ learning differences, their needs, and accommodations.
  • Facilitate remediation of reading, writing, and spelling through the DuBard Association Method. 
  • Communicate with students in a professional, calm, and supportive manner and serve as a student advocate.
  • Work as an effective team member with other faculty, new teachers, and non-teaching staff. Create a positive, collaborative, and respectful working environment.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with parents and colleagues in a supportive and positive manner.
  • Write professional, articulate, factual progress notes, report cards, and email communication in a timely manner.
  • Provide supervision in various duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, carpool, recess, lunch, and other duties as requested.
  • Maintain a clean and organized space that is aesthetically appealing and is student-centered.
  • Attend curriculum and staff meetings and complete the required professional development hours annually by attending staff development, in-service programs, and other training that will impact student learning and/or lead to an advanced degree.
  • Attend parent conferences three times a year and at other times at the request of the parent or school administration.
  • Arrive promptly according to the hours defined in the employee agreement.
  • Create and have readily available plans for a substitute. 
  • Physically manage the class in emergency situations, including fire, weather, and lockdown drills. Ensure safe transitions to designated areas for all school-related safety drills. 
  • Support the mission of the Shelton School by promoting the school in a positive manner and facilitating a sense of Shelton community.
  • Fulfill other professional responsibilities as assigned.
